April is Rosacea Awareness Month, and since we’ve covered the facts about rosacea in our Facts About Rosacea blog post, we’d like to educate you on the four subtypes and how we can treat them. This chronic skin disease affects more than 16 million Americans, and the cause is unknown with no cure. However, you can control your rosacea with the proper steps. Read on to learn about the subtypes of rosacea, their characteristics, and how we can help alleviate your symptoms.
The Four Subtypes of Rosacea
Subtype One: Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea (ETR) is the first subtype of rosacea, and some of the common signs are facial flushing, redness and visible blood vessels. The skin may swell, be overly sensitive, dry or scaly.
Subtype Two: Papulopustular (or acne) rosacea is common in, but not limited to, middle-aged women. It is connected to acne-like breakouts. Other signs of this subtype may include oily skin, broken and visible blood vessels, raised skin patches and overall skin sensitivity.
Subtype Three: Phymatous rosacea is a rare form of rosacea associated with Rhinophyma (skin thickening on the nose). It generally affects men, and another subtype of rosacea may also accompany it. Signs include thick skin on the nose, bumpy skin texture, thick skin on the cheeks, ears, forehead and chin. You may also notice large pores and visibly broken blood vessels.
Subtype Four: Ocular rosacea and its symptoms center around the eye area. The signs include bloodshot eyes, a gritty feeling around the eyes, a stinging sensation, sensitivity to light, styes and broken blood vessels on the eyelids. Crust or scaling may accumulate around the eyes and lashes.
Treating Rosacea
At Boise Dermatology & Medspa, we will identify the type of rosacea you have and the best way to treat it. That may include prescription medications (topical and/or oral), light-based treatments and possible lifestyle changes. Once the triggers for flare-ups are determined, we may suggest some changes to your daily routine that can impact your symptoms.
