Facial Volume Loss

Facial volume loss is usually noticeable in the form of hollow/sunken cheeks or temples and thin lips.

What is facial volume loss?

Facial volume loss is usually noticeable in the form of hollow/sunken cheeks or temples and thin lips. It can often give off a grim appearance. Hollow cheeks appear to recede inward into the facial bones, instead of projecting outward. Around the 30s, you might notice that your lips are becoming thinner and deflated. You might also experience loose skin around the jawline, which gives off the appearance of a weak chin.

What are the causes?

As with most aesthetic concerns, the aging process often results in the loss of facial volume. Not only do our bodies produce less collagen (which gives skin its elasticity and plumpness), but subcutaneous fat is lost as we grow older. A sudden loss of weight, smoking, and other poor lifestyle choices can also accentuate this look.

Thin lips occur for the same reason that your skin begins to sag over time: lost collagen and hyaluronic acid (HA). Collagen and HA give our lips plumpness, moisture, and an overall look of youthfulness. Lip shape and size is also determined by genetics. If your lips are naturally small, there’s a good chance that your lips will begin to thin out in your late 20s.

How is facial volume loss treated?

If you have thin lips, hollow cheeks, or sunken temples that you’d like to add volume to, we provide dermal filler injections. Dermal fillers are generally safe for the body and can add plumpness and youth to your face and skin. At Boise Dermatology & Medspa, we carry Juvéderm products, allowing us to address particular volume loss concerns.
